Treatment of Severe Dengue-Induced Thrombocytopenia
Dengue is a highly prevalent mosquito borne viral disease infecting several patients each year. Its clinical symptoms vary from mild fever to life-threatening shock. Thrombocytopenia is a prominent feature of dengue infection. A platelet count of less than 100,000/μl is one of the diagnostic criteria for dengue hemorrhagic fever. Severe thrombocytopenia can be seen in both dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever secondary to platelet destruction and bone marrow suppression.
ABH Blood bank is equipped with an automated Trima Accel blood collection system from Terumo that allows collection of Single Donor Platelets. These blood products may help in treatment and save lives of patients suffering from severe dengue-related thrombocytopenia and thrombocytopenia secondary to other causes.
